About the SocietyThis is a featured page

The Wisconsin State Genealogical Society, WSGS for short, is a statewide genealogical organization. Founded in 1939, WSGS now has members both within and outside of Wisconsin.

WSGS is a non-stock, nonprofit Wisconsin corporation whose basic purpose is to encourage, facilitate and improve the quality of genealogical study in Wisconsin and about Wisconsin families. To these ends WSGS:

  • Collects and publishes genealogical and historical material related to Wisconsin families and their forebears

  • Conducts meetings and conferences for the instruction and interest of members

  • Encourages the establishment of genealogical collections in libraries throughout the state

  • Works to ensure public records in Wisconsin remain open for genealogical and historical research.

WSGS is proud to be a member of the Wisconsin Council for Local History, the Federation of Genealogical Societies, and an organizational life member of the National Genealogical Society.

Please Note:

WSGS is not a research organization. We do not do genealogical research, nor do we maintain a genealogical library.

Persons seeking assistance with genealogical research in Wisconsin should see the Members Directory of the Association of Professional Genealogists at http://www.apgen.org/directory/search.html?type=location&new_search=true or the Board for Certification of Genealogists at http://www.bcgcertification.org/associates/search_results.php?surname=&first_name=&organization=&state=WI&country=&special_interests= to find researchers who live in Wisconsin and take clients.

WSGS does not accept donated family history materials such as photographs, family group sheets, pedigree charts, scrapbooks or accumulated research, as we have nowhere to store them and no one to catalog or maintain them. PLEASE do not throw those precious materials away, though! There are many local history rooms in public libraries or local historical societies who would love to have materials relating to people who lived in their area. Please contact them about possible donations.

For a list of Wisconsin public libraries, see http://dpi.wi.gov/pld/wis_lib.html.
