Membership in the Society has the benefit of a significant amount of free lookups in their collection of materials. Their new Research Room is located in Room 131 of the Old Barron County Health Department Building at 410 East LaSalle Avenue, Barron, WI 54812 and is open to the Public from 1-4 pm, non-holiday Mondays and 4:30-7:30 pm Thursdays (February-November) or by special appointment by calling 715-458-4165 or 715-234-1894.

The society has a significant collection of obituaries, Barron County Civil War veterans research, cemetery abstracts & photo's, church histories, cemetery maps, community histories and other items of research value. The Society also serves as the bridge to finding all those other record sources for and in Barron County.

Published works for sale include the 1888 and 1903 (two earliest) platbooks of the county with land owners index, and a growing number of Abstracts of Barron County Cemeteries, photo's of individual tombstones, County maps with cemetery locations (new) and DVDs of the German Genealogy Seminar by David Barthels, the Scot and Irish Genealogy Seminar by Tom Rice, and one of England & Wales Genealogy by Mike Puckett.

Links to Barron county newspapers, media, libraries, funeral homes etc. can all be found on the Society website. There is a page of surnames that are the focus of members research and can help serve to connect people who would like to collaborate on research.The Society website has a new page which is a directory of cemetery sextons/contacts for the cemeteries in the county. And the Inventory of the Society holdings can be found on the Research Room Link on the Society website.

The Society has regularly scheduled meetings on the Second Monday evening of each month, February through November. Location for the meetings will be in 2nd Floor Conference Room at the Barron County Health Department Building at 410 East LaSalle, Barron, WI but may change due to special programs. The Hospitality room opens at 6pm with beverages and snacks, a short business meeting and announcments begins at 630 pm. The program for the evening will begin after this around 7:00 pm. Checking the Calendar of events at the Society web site for any off site meetings or cancellations is recommended.

BHGS has initiated a new program for 2012. Free Beginners Genealogy lessons will be held the first Thursday of each month in the Society Research Room in Barron. Reservations for a seat in the class are limited and can be made by calling Denise at 715-458-4165 or by email to dervasti14@gmail.com. There is limited seating. Attendance for this free class is offered freely to both members and the general public. The classes will begin promptly at 4:30 pm and end by 7:00 pm.

Society meetings and Research Room access is suspended during a winter recess from about the second week in November up until Feb. 1st. Exact dates and any changes can be found on the Society web pages. Visit us on Facebook for updates and events of interest.

Meetings will resume on Feb. 13, 2012 and the Research Room will reopen on the same date, 1-4 pm. Then the resumed schedule of Mondays 1-4pm and Thursdays 4:30-7:30 pm will proceed from that date.

Libraries:

This collection showcases selections from the local history collections of 14 West-Central and Northwestern Wisconsin public libraries. The collection contains texts (including community records, local history narratives and retrospectives, high school yearbooks, and maps) and images of community sites, events, and residents.

They are open to the public Thurs-Sun from 1-5 pm in June, July and August. While the Museum volunteers are not all experienced genealogists they will try to help where they can. They have recorded interviews of family members in regards to family history, Barron County school records and other records of interest. Some are not open to the public, therefore arrangements with the Museum may have to be made to obtain the information or records of interest. The Blue Hills Genealogical Society-Barron County, Inc. has an inventory of the Museum records.

The ARC holds the archived materials of the Wisconsin Historical Society for Barron, Dunn and Pepin Counties. The searchable indexes online for ARC Newspaper Indexes and the County Court Records Index, reference tons of records including Probates before 1910, Naturalization papers, divorces over 50 years old, funeral home records and court judgement records. Their web site at www.uwstout.edu/lib/arc is a must for Barron County researchers. You can go to the Archives in Menomonie, Wisconsin, and view microfilmed records for the 3 counties OR order microfilms from other Wisconsin ARC branches of the Wisconsin Historical Society Library on an inter-ARC loan. The Blue Hills Genealogical Society has an itemized list of many of the Barron County resources held by the ARC.

Museums:
Museums in Barron County include the Pioneer Village and Museum, the Chetek Area Calhoun Museum and the Haugen Museum. The Calhoun Museum is located at 120 Knapp Street in Chetek, and their website is found at www.chetekmuseum.org. They are open to the public from Memorial Day through Labor Day, Mondays through Saturdays, 1:00 to 4:30 pm.
