A Wisconsin-based genealogical or historical membership society is one which is headquartered in Wisconsin or has Wisconsin residents as a significant portion of its membership who are clearly interested in WSGS' basic purpose of encouraging, facilitating and improving the quality of genealogical study in Wisconsin and about Wisconsin families . What qualifies as a "significant portion" of its membership, for societies not headquartered in Wisconsin, will be decided on a case by case basis by the President if the WSGS office staff has any doubts about an affiliation application. It does not exclude societies with a primary interest based on ethnicity rather than settlement in Wisconsin. A perfect example of a society based on ethnicity not headquartered in Wisconsin, but which qualifies to be a WSGS affiliate, is the British Interest Group of Wisconsin and Illinois (BIGWILL).
